In 1998, 132 House incumbents stood for reelection. Of these incumbents, 125 (95 percent) were reelected. Five of the seven losing incumbents lost in a primary and two lost in the general election. Only 52 of the 132 incumbents seeking reelection (39 percent) faced a challenge in either their primary or general election. These 52 incumbents faced a total of 71 individual challengers who they outspent by a ratio of 2.5:1. Only 36 incumbents found themselves with opponents in the general election. These 36 incumbents outspent their challengers by the same ratio of 2.6:1.
