Justice Jefferson Urged Not To Taint Office With Unneeded Campaign Funds

Austin, TX: : Texans for Public Justice congratulates Wallace Jefferson today on his nomination to be the newest justice on the Texas Supreme Court.

Statement of Cris Feldman, director of TPJ’s Court Reform Project:

“We congratulate Justice Jefferson on his nomination and challenge him to break with court tradition by refusing to raise campaign money to face a non-existent opponent. Under current law, Justice Jefferson can raise campaign money in his first 60 days in office—even though he will not yet face an opponent for the 2002 election. This unilateral fundraising does unnecessary damage to the court’s tattered reputation. We encourage Justice Jefferson to set higher ethical standards for the court.”
