Eighty incumbent House members
ran unopposed in both the 1998 primary and general elections, a 31 percent
increase over the 61 unopposed incumbents in 1996. Despite
the fact that they faced no opposition -- or perhaps to ensure that they
would not be opposed -- these 80 incumbents raised more than $6 million.
The average amount raised by these unopposed members was $76,900,
an increase of 30 percent over the $59,000 average raised by unopposed
incumbents for the 1996 election.
