Correction:
An early version of this report inadvertently flipped key PAC expenditure numbers in charts and text that appeared in Section II, “Comparing Business, Ideological and Labor PACs.” In fact, Business PACs spent more than Ideological PACs. The correct numbers are that Business PACs spent $57 million (58 percent of all PAC expenditures) and Ideological and Single-Issue PACs spent $37 million (37 percent of all PAC spending).
Nonetheless, spending by Ideological and Single-Issue PACs grew much faster from 2004 to 2006 than spending by Business PACs. Spending by Ideological and Single-Issue PACs increased a remarkable 108 percent from 2004 to 2006. During the same period Business PAC spending increased 24 percent.
In short, while Ideological and Single-Issue PACs dramatically expanded their share of the total PAC pie, the $37 million that they spent still fell short of the $57 million spent by Business PACs. This version of the report has been corrected. TPJ regrets the error.
